Which Macs have controllable fans?

Some Macs have no fan at all, and on some the fan exists but cannot be written to. Here is which family is which, how to check the Mac in front of you, and what a fan control app does with each answer.

The short answer

If your Mac is a MacBook Air, it has no fan. Apple cools every Apple Silicon Air passively, through the body of the machine, with no moving parts inside. There is nothing for a fan control app to control on an Air, from the M1 onward.

Every other Apple Silicon Mac has at least one fan. MacBook Pro, Mac mini, Mac Studio, the 24-inch iMac, and Mac Pro all use active cooling, and on those machines the fan speed can be set by hand.

The MacBook Air is the fanless family

The Air is the one Apple Silicon line with no fan. M1, M2, M3, M4, and the models after them are all passively cooled. The chip sits against a heat spreader and the aluminum enclosure carries the heat out. When an Air gets hot enough, macOS slows the chip down, because slowing down is the only cooling lever the machine has.

This is worth saying plainly, because plenty of fan control advice does not: no software can give an Air a fan. If your Air slows under a long export, the remedies are physical. Get it off a soft surface, give the case air, work in a cooler room, or break the job into shorter runs.

What an Air can use is measurement. Breeze reads the temperature sensors on a fanless Mac exactly as it does on any other: CPU performance cores, CPU efficiency cores, GPU, and the wider SoC package, sampled every two seconds and kept as a rolling five-minute history. Monitoring is free, so on an Air you get the whole readout and no upsell. Watching for throttling is usually the useful thing on that machine anyway.

Macs that do have fans

Every current Mac family other than the Air ships with active cooling. The exact number of fans varies by configuration within a family, so the notes below stay at the level that is actually true across the line.

Breeze does not decide any of this from a table. It reads the fan count from your hardware at launch and builds its interface from what it finds, which is why a configuration that carries an extra fan simply shows an extra fan.

How to check the Mac in front of you

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. It shows the model name and the chip.
  2. Read the chip line. Anything beginning with Apple M is Apple Silicon. Anything reading Intel Core is not, and no version of Breeze will run on it.
  3. Read the model name. If it says MacBook Air, you have no fan and no manual control to enable.
  4. For every other model, install Breeze and let it answer the rest. It reports the exact number of fans it found and whether each one is writable, which is more specific than any published spec sheet.

Why the line is drawn at Apple Silicon

Breeze needs an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 15 Sequoia or later. On an Intel Mac it refuses to launch rather than half working, because the hardware layout it writes fan keys to is the Apple Silicon one and guessing at the other would be writing to hardware on a hunch.

The check is an architecture test, arm64 or not. It is not a list of chip generations, and there is no hardcoded model list anywhere in the app. That means M1 through M5 and every chip after them are supported by construction, on the day the machine ships, with no update needed. A Mac that has not been announced yet is already on the list.

What “controllable” actually means

Here is the nuance that model lists miss. A fan existing and a fan being writable are two different facts, and only the second one lets you set a speed.

Breeze probes every fan individually instead of assuming. A fan counts as controllable only if both of the keys it needs, the target speed and the mode, report themselves as writable. If either does not, that fan is shown as Read-only and Breeze monitors it rather than pretending it can steer it. You get the live RPM either way, and you are told which case you are in.

The labels come from the same reading of the hardware. On a Mac with one fan it is simply called “Fan”. On a portable with two, they are “Left Fan” and “Right Fan”, with portable meaning the machine has a battery. Anything else is numbered, “Fan 1”, “Fan 2”, and so on. Breeze accepts a count from one to eight and treats a reading outside that range as implausible rather than acting on it.

What happens on a Mac it cannot control

There are three ways a Mac can fall short of full manual control, and each says so.

  • An Intel Mac. Breeze will not launch. Nothing is written, nothing is half-configured.
  • A Mac with no fans.Breeze reports it in plain words, “This Mac has no fans. Nothing to control.” Temperature monitoring keeps working in full.
  • A fan that is present but not writable. That fan appears as read-only, with its speed visible and its slider absent.
